    Electronic structure and rovibrational predissociation of the 2sPi state in KLi

    Adiabatic potential energy curves of the 3sSigma+, 3tSigma+, 2sPi and 2tPi states correlating for large internuclear distance with the K(4s) + Li(2p) atomic asymptote were calculated. Very good agreement between the calculated and the experimental curve of the 2sPi state allowed for a reliable description of the dissociation process through a small (20 cm-1 for J = 0) potential energy barrier. The barrier supports several rovibrational quasi-bound states and explicit time evolution of these states via the time-dependent nuclear Schroedinger equation, showed that the state populations decay exponentially in time. We were able to precisely describe the time-dependent dissociation process of several rovibrational levels and found that our calculated spectrum match very well with the assigned experimental spectrum.     Design of Glass for High, Short Duration Wind Loads

    This paper describes a case study for the design of structural glazed IGUs for theNew Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland, which is subjected to high local windloads of approximately 10kN/m2, with a load duration of approximately 0.1s. Thepaper focuses on how to interpret the current available codes and research to obtaina glass thickness with adequate resistance for the high short duration loads. Thepaper also focuses on the wind loads to be applied when calculating the fixingsystem, the structural silicone, the embedded aluminium profiles and the toggleswhich fix the glass to the aluminium mullions. For short duration wind loads, thencurrently available codes and guidelines only provide the equivalent glass stress fora 3s load duration, equivalent to a kmod = 1. The paper explains how wind load fromwind tunnel tests should be used when sizing glass, and concludes how the IGUsfor the Reykjavik New Concert Hall were sized

    The former director of Grønlands Geologiske Undersøgelse (GGU; The Geological Survey of Greenland), Knud Ellitsgaard- Rasmussen, died on 1 December 2009, 86 years old. Ellitsgaard was for many years a driving force in the build-up of GGU and became, as a relatively young geologist, its leader in 1956. In 1966 he was formally appointed director and remained in this position until his retirement in 1983

    Lasing on a narrow transition in a cold thermal strontium ensemble

    Highly stable laser sources based on narrow atomic transitions provide a promising platform for direct generation of stable and accurate optical frequencies. Here we investigate a simple system operating in the high-temperature regime of cold atoms. The interaction between a thermal ensemble of 88^{88}Sr at mK temperatures and a medium-finesse cavity produces strong collective coupling and facilitates high atomic coherence which causes lasing on the dipole forbidden 1^1S0↔3_0 \leftrightarrow ^3P1_1 transition. We experimentally and theoretically characterize the lasing threshold and evolution of such a system, and investigate decoherence effects in an unconfined ensemble. We model the system using a Tavis-Cummings model, and characterize velocity-dependent dynamics of the atoms as well as the dependency on the cavity-detuning.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Disorder mediated splitting of the cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems

    We perform a direct study of the magnitude of the anomalous splitting in the cyclotron resonance (CR) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) as a function of sample disorder. In a series of AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, identical except for a range of carbon doping in the well, we find the CR splitting to vanish at high sample mobilities but to increase dramatically with increasing impurity density and electron scattering rates. This observation lends strong support to the conjecture that the non-zero wavevector, roton-like minimum in the dispersion of 2D magnetoplasmons comes into resonance with the CR, with the two modes being coupled via disorder.Comment: accepted to PRB Rapid Com

    Non-linear Spectroscopy of Sr Atoms in an Optical Cavity for Laser Stabilization

    We study the non-linear interaction of a cold sample of strontium-88 atoms coupled to a single mode of a low finesse optical cavity in the so-called bad cavity limit and investigate the implications for applications to laser stabilization. The atoms are probed on the weak inter-combination line \lvert 5s^{2} \, ^1 \textrm{S}_0 \rangle \,-\, \lvert 5s5p \, ^3 \textrm{P}_1 \rangle at 689 nm in a strongly saturated regime. Our measured observables include the atomic induced phase shift and absorption of the light field transmitted through the cavity represented by the complex cavity transmission coefficient. We demonstrate high signal-to-noise-ratio measurements of both quadratures - the cavity transmitted phase and absorption - by employing FM spectroscopy (NICE-OHMS). We also show that when FM spectroscopy is employed in connection with a cavity locked to the probe light, observables are substantially modified compared to the free space situation where no cavity is present. Furthermore, the non-linear dynamics of the phase dispersion slope is experimentally investigated and the optimal conditions for laser stabilization are established. Our experimental results are compared to state-of-the-art cavity QED theoretical calculations.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
